or inspiration, people turn to their long time idols. One such idol is Michel Canetti. Canetti is raved as one of France’s leading fashion illustrators and among the few, who early on, followed his dreams and passions into a career. With the level of uncertainty in the world’s economy, unemployed yet inspired people, are taking to their hobbies to turn their fortunes around. Many freshly graduated college students and laid off long time workers have found that success is more in the modes of the inventive, than in the modes of the traditional. Canetti’s work has become a worldwide inspiration and rightfully so. Michel Canetti’s passion for painting started at a young age. Born in 1955, he did his first canvas painting around age 14. Oil paints started the artist down the path he travels today. With slow drying characteristics, he is able to spend more time on one spot, which is a desirable ability when creating. Over time, Michel found that the quick drying median of acrylics was much more his style for canvas. Canetti’s abrupt strokes and minimal vogue found more of a groove with this paint, which matched his work’s nature. Though when creating on paper, Canetti prefers the ascetic variations of gouache. “On paper, I use gouache. It could be opaque or transparent as watercolor if use with enough water,” Canetti explains.

::art:: Enrolled in the Sorbonne in Paris, Canetti’s studies lead him to either art or biology. He said he did not care for the biology building and that is how he found himself studying art... that and of course the influence of a beautiful woman. “After my [baccalaureate] in France, I put my name in 2 universities: Biology and Art, but I did not go to biology because I did not like the building, and I did follow my girl friend in art,” said Canetti. Michel started his career and worked off of the assumption that after doing just one page he would get call backs. “It is not the case. You have to ring everyone, all the time to show your work. The art directors do not do much effort to look at new portfolios, and there is a lot a people calling them so you have to be patient and do it again and again....The art directors also change all the time.” Like many, Canetti realized that being an artist was not easy, but unlike others, Canetti continued pushing for his passion, never giving up. Today, he works with many of the top names in fashion such as, Chanel, Neiman Marcus, Estee’ Lauder, De Beers, Dior, and, L’Oreal. His work has been exhibited all over Europe including, Paris, Zurich, Hamburg, and Melbourne. So what type of advice does this talented and successful artist have to give to aspiring artists? “It is not easy to be a artist. You do not only have to be good, but you have to be lucky.”

EMILY Gillies Australian born Illustrator Emily Gillies expresses her love for producing art the old fashioned way...with a pencil and paper. By Stephanie Walker

rom Maclean to Newcastle Australia, Emily Gilliies is a natural artist. Her love affair with art began the first time she picked up a paint brush at the age of 3. She would take her artworks and use them to decorate the door of her grandmother’s bedroom. This love for art would continue while she was in school and eventually led to her departure from school. “I left school after year 10. I was told that if art was the career I wanted that completing my HSC was not needed.,” stated Emily. She did go through certification courses for art but found that she did not care for the type of art being taught and therefore did not want to pursue it as a career. This led her to studying health and fitness and currently nursing. Yet all the while, art was her hobby. Having art as a hobby made it fun and enjoyable. As she got older she found what made her “click” and used that inspiration to create her illustrations. Emily refers to herself as an illustrator. Most of her work is pencil drawings and sketches. “I like illustrating... because I enjoy recreating beautiful things the way I see them, I find it to be very therapeutic and relaxing to take an entire day out to just do artwork,” exclaimed Emily. Her biggest inspirations are unique people. One such person is Lady Gaga. “I see the amount of passion and effort behind everything she does, every film clip is like a short movie and story,” said Emily.

With the drive to learn art on her own, Emily shows the world that you can be driven by your passion. ou have heard her music on Laurieann Gibson’s E! reality show, The Dance Scene, but that was only the beginning. New York native, Missy Modell is an up and coming pop, rock, and soul artist who has been featured as an honorable mention on PerezHilton. com more times than you can count and is taking the city by storm. It was not until Missy’s break up with her boyfriend of three years, that she found her passion for songwriting. This recent graduate of Skidmore College,however, has been singing since she was a little girl.Her growth is not just limited to her vocals and songwriting skills. Her musical tastes definitely cross the spectrum both personally and professionally. “I like coming up with ideas on my own and then bringing in people that I trust and respect. Two heads are always better than one. I am definitely a fan of the collaboration process.” As for her personal influences, Modell says, “When I was younger, I was exposed to a really eclectic bunch of artists. My mom was into Celine Dion and power ballad singers while my dad listened to Motown and disco and stuff. So there’s quite a mix there but what stands out is definitely the theatrics from my mom.”
How did you find your sound? “Honestly, just trial and error. I’m still on that journey though...listening to other people that I like and letting my environment affect me. I’ve lived in LA, Atlanta, and New York. Every single city has such a different vibe. LA is so laid back and I find myself a little more chill and then there’s NY which is more emotional, just a little more raw. The city definitely affects me on a deeper level than other places.”
With such an open mind, Missy Modell is a fresh addition to the music world. Watching her craft her individual sound along the way is bound to be a treat for listeners who tune in now. Missy share more on finding her sound and her safe haven with her love for music.

How would you say your songwriting has grown over the years? “Oh my God! The first song that I wrote, in college, was called, “Grow Up.” Now I’m writing about being comfortable in a relationship and how do you know when it’s love. The material has definitely matured, I’ve matured as a person.” Where is your safe haven? “I like writing at my house, on the couch with candles and taking in the view there.” What is your favorite venue so far? “I love performing for students. I went to a boarding school and they had such an amazing energy. They were so excited to have me and hear my music, so that was really fun.” Share your thoughts on being featured on Perez Hilton? “I am a big fan of the blog and he has a really cool audience and a great music influence. Life’s greatest achievements often come in the form of giving. For world class harpist, Jeff Majors, his gift allows him to bless the world, exponentially, as he uplifts souls from all walks of life in a committed effort to bring change and hope to those in need. Jeff has released 11 albums. He has had 8 albums on the billboard charts, and his charting singles include “God’s Gift” featuring Kelly Price, which peaked at #2, and “Beggar” featuring the late Gerald Levert. Jeff is also known for hosting “Sunday Joy” (Magic 95.9 and 102.3 FM), and TV One’s “Gospel of Music with Jeff Majors.” For the funeral services of Coretta Scott King (MLK’s widow), he was personally selected by the King family and teamed with the late singer Don Jones to deliver a timeless performance. Jeff grew up in a musical household in Washington, DC where the “ingrained discipline” he received was further fostered by attending Archbishop Carroll High School. When asked about his childhood musical training, he mentions that his mother, Annie Fitzgerald, was a skilled jazz trumpeter. As a youth he played the trumpet, but it was not until the age of 15 when destiny called in the form of a dream. Jeff vividly recalls dreaming of “strumming a harp,” an instrument he had never played. He was so moved by the vision that he went to a local music store owner, who crafted Jeff a hand made harp. Majors did not miss a stride and began translating his musical background into learning the harp. After graduating high school, Majors journeyed to California, where he took his study of the harp to another level under the tutelage of Alice Coltrane (widow of iconic saxophonist, John Coltrane). He also worked with legendary jazz harpist, Dorothy Ashby. With his skills sharpened by these experiences, Majors came back to Washington, DC. He played jazz in bands he formed, and eventually brought his talents to the airwaves, as an “on air” personality for the Radio One Network, where he still serves today as the Vice President of gospel music programming. Discussing his approach to musical composition, Majors paints a picture of an artist who is driven by “purpose” and “spirit led.” His goal is more so “understanding the message and purpose of the song...” than simply making a song. while explaining that both his race, and being a harpist, in a commercial genre, were challenges since the market was not initially geared to accept what he was offering. He humbly “... gives God the thanks for opening the ears... to what he was applying musically.” Jeff expresses that he “steps into a sacred place every time I step behind my instrument.” He describes the spiritual connection, and how he feels and gives back to the audience in a mutual sharing of energy. Majors recently recorded a new single “Shine,” featuring singer Ashia Bello, and the spoken word of Dr. Maya Angelou. “I want to shine... Help me to shine” are words that strike deep, when put into the context of Jeff’s most important work, his non-profit organization, “The Network of Doves,” along with his initiatives “Blankets for the Homeless,” and “Hip-Hop for the Homeless.” Majors was motivated to champion the cause of the homeless after encountering a homeless man, who was a former professor of physics, at Howard University (Washington, DC). That led Jeff to spend over 8 days sleeping with the homeless on the streets of Baltimore, and “birthed” his homeless campaign, which includes a national tour of free concerts. When speaking of the plight of the homeless, Jeff displays a deep passion and desire to “help get people back on their feet.” Words such as “love” and “care” are echoed, and he poignantly declares that “homeless has no color” and “...all homeless people are not jobless... or derelict.” Majors is currently working on new music releases, including the “Epistles” series (his latest album: “Sacred Epistles”). The Legacy Continues… Joey Newman Shines Joey Newman is a genuinely passionate composer, orchestrator and conductor. He has known from a young age that he would be involved with music. Receiving his first drum kit at eight years old, Mr. Newman started to develop the skills that were innately derived from a successful family lineage of film composers that preceded him. The legacy set before him includes his grandfather, Lionel Newman, great-uncle, Alfred Newman and father Joe Frank Carollo. Joey Newman’s formal studies of composition began at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. Even though he went to school in pursuit to be a session drummer, Mr. Newman felt that percussion and drums limited his ability to do so many other things. Realizing that he was not defined by that instrument, Mr. Newman knew just playing percussion was not going to be a true extension of his soul. His desire to be a composer was about the experience he desired from music. He said, “I was attracted to recording music with musicians and experiencing the magic first hand.” Mr. Newman’s latest involvement is with The Young Musicians Foundation’s 57th Gala Concert which took place Sunday, January 15th at Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. The concert was to benefit children and youth to receive music education, scholarships, professional training and performance opportunities. Joey Newman was amongst other famed conductors including John Williams and
Michael Tilson Thomas. The kindred spirit between John Williams and Joey Newman was evident as Mr. Newman reflected with anecdotes as he introduced John Williams to the podium. The spirit of the event supported Mr. Newman’s humble thought that, “He is always a student, always will be. So much to learn from so many great people.” The Young Musicians Foundation allows Mr. Newman to be a part of nurturing the future of music. “The time is coming for the new regime to come... breath of new air.” He continued to say the art is applying the knowledge to something that is real and transitioning that in a manner that allows one to find their voice. He is a true believer that, Experience makes it real and many composers learn by doing. A passionate thrust Mr. Newman will contribute to Y.M.F. is his knowledge of film scoring and motivating the younger generation to be versatile at the highest standard possible. Truly leading by example, Mr. Newman is quite accomplished. He has composed music for features, network cable series, video games and provided arrangements for several recording artists. Most recently, Joey Newman’s music can be heard on the hit ABC comedy “The Middle” and the TLC docu-series “Little People, Big World,” for which his underscore was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. igerian actor Nyambi Nyambi has a double name, which may turn a few heads. However, it is his acting skills that keeps everyone looking. Currently on the CBS show “Mike and Molly,” Nyambi plays the intelligent and well-traveled character “Samuel” from Senegal. In real life, Nyambi’s intelligence and diversity is parallel to his character on the show, as he too has many interesting and surprising notches on his belt. Recently, he played alongside Al Pacino, Hamish Linklater and Ruben Santiago-Hudson in “The Merchant of Venice,” in New York City Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park. Many great actors are known for having strong roots in theater. This is something Nyambi Nyambi is very thankful and proud of, having also performed on Broadway. He is a company member with The Williamstown Theater Festival and The Classical Theatre of Harlem. Speaking of New York, Nyambi recently earned a Masters of Fine Art from New York University (NYU) and has plans to obtain a second Masters degree from the University of Oklahoma in Administrative Leadership to assist with his production company goals. Talk about impressive! However, if you are going to become a fan, you should know how to correctly pronounce his name. There is the American pronunciation, which is three syllables, “Knee-Am-Bee” or the Nigerian pronunciation using two syllables “Nyam-Bi.” He admits that hearing the American pronunciation of his name while playing basketball was always an interesting experience for him. You heard correctly...this actor is an athlete as well. Nyambi was named to ESPN’s Dick Vitale’s “All Name Team” for the best names in college basketball. Nyambi attended Bucknell University on a basketball scholarship and graduated from the university. Nyambi proves to have many talents on display. Currently playing in the NBAE (NBA – Entertainers) league in Los Angeles, he has a chance to show his true ballhandling skills alongside other extremely talented entertainers such as Adam Sandler, Zac Efron and Jamie Foxx. Very humble about his talents on the basketball court, he shared that he does not try to show off, but rather enjoy the game, have fun and enjoy watching the other players. While his goals of playing professional basketball are a distant memory, his true passion, acting, is a very clear reality. Audrey Jones has taken her love for acting and theater arts and transformed it into a vehicle for others to succeed in the performing arts in Washington, DC. words: Stephanie Walker

here are so many young people who want to break into the entertainment industry. Many make it on pure luck. Others are able to based on who they know. Now, one can make it on what they know. Model and actress Audrey Jones created Images of Success (IOS) to do just that. She learned a lot on the sets of Boomerang, Lean on Me, The Wire and The West Wing. Knowing first hand the variable opportunities that exist from state to state, she decided to become proactive and help blaze a path. It is important for Ms. Jones to not only teach people about the industry, but how to maintain integrity while treading the journey. Images of Success is a training program out of the Washington, DC area offering classes that focus on skills for models and actors. These classes not only help students to learn about the inside of the industry, it also hinges on life skills, morals and values. “I incorporate

classes on etiquette, interviews, finances, etc. to make the student a well-rounded person and to learn about the many images” to “success,” said Ms. Jones. Graduates of the program receive posts for various auditions and have the opportunity to be in projects produced by Ms. Jones. Some helpful tips she gives to new actors going on auditions are: 1. Come prepared – have headshot and acting resume 2. Treat the receptionist with respect – this may be an assistant director or someone of importance checking for your attitude 3. Listen for instructions and follow them – directors want to work with those who take direction well. he Voice’s innovative format features three stages of competition: blind auditions, battle rounds, and live performance shows. During the blind auditions, the decisions from the musician coaches are based solely on voice and not looks or stage presence. The coaches hear the artists perform, but they do not get to see them. If a coach is impressed by the artist’s voice, he/she pushes a button to select the artist for his/her team until they select 12 members. Once the teams are set, coaches will dedicate themselves to developing their singers, giving them advice, and sharing the secrets of their success for the battle rounds where coaches place two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of a studio audience. After the vocal face-off, the coach must choose which of his/her singers will advance to the live performance shows. The
The Voice remaining artists compete against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience votes to save their favorite talent, leaving the coach to decide live who they want to save and who will not move on. In the end, each coach will have one star artist left ready to compete against the other teams’ finalists to be named “The Voice.” The winner will receive the grand prize of a recording contract. This season legendary Lionel Richie, multi-platinum artists Kelly Clarkson, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Jewel, Miranda Lambert, Alanis Morissette, Ne-Yo and Robin Thicke lend their expertise as advisers during battle rounds. This season’s battle rounds produced surprising results, as some of the artists who were most impressive are eliminated during the battle rounds - to the coaches’ surprise as well. Anything can happen and the live performances are set to be explosive and entertaining. While the interactions between the judges Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine can get a little heated, the voices on the stage are set to be strong. ay Ban Sunglasses, Toms shoes, sugarfree Red Bull, an iPod, and a movie ticket stub are five items you might find inside of Toni’s purse right now, showing us this fashion diva is well equipped for the new season. Spring marks a new season full of changes! Changes in the weather, in music and especially in fashion is exciting to most people, and true fashionistas like myself are simply ecstatic. As we wave good-bye to our beloved boots and replace them with our care-free open-toe shoes, we can also say hello to a new face in Hollywood, Toni Busker. Toni is a model, actress and trendsetter that played one of the seductive mermaids in Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides. Do you remember that long flowing hair on the screen in Wall Street 2, Sex and the City 2, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, What happens in Vegas and the TV show 30 Rock, starring Tina Fey (my personal favorite)? Who can forget that warm smile that blends well with any spring day? Not many models can successfully transition from the runway to the big screen, but Toni has something special that makes her shine so brightly. “ I have been a model since the age of 5. I started acting at age 17, but I almost feel as if I’ve been acting my entire life. Modeling taught me a lot about movement, expressions and portraying emotion. I find acting to be much more fulfilling because I can actually use words to express myself,” said Toni.

So what does Toni think of when she thinks of spring? “New trends, exciting relationships and driving alone with my top down,” is what she shared with us. She likes to spend her spring days hanging out in Central Park (New York, USA) reading books and writing music. During those spots of time when she is not working she enjoys playing pool at a local dive bar. “I also love playing the piano or guitar. Still learning but its all coming together. Maybe one day someone will actually sit in the room when I play,” shared Toni. Her musical talents have not been shared with us publicly, but I am sure it is in the works. Berck, is the founder and creator of the famous B Bag, and her line of women’s handbags have found a permanent place among the famous boho-chic fashion of today.
Though her story was not always a fairytale, it was her driving passion to mesh her creative flare and her fashion sense into something that would help support her family. Even with her ups and downs in life, Berck has attributed her successes to all of the twists and turns she has made.
Berck’s fashion career started when she entered the modeling world after high school. When she found she had lost her passion for modeling, but not for fashion, Berck went back to school for business management and started her own line of handbags. Since the company’s creation a year ago, the LisaBerck fashion line has taken off like wild fire.
Berck has never forgotten her roots and has even created a collection in support of Brest Cancer Awareness month. As her mother is an eight year survivor of the disease, this line is something very close to her heart. Further proof of how her life has lead her down the road she enjoys now.
“It was started on a need and a prayer or ten,” says Berck talking about the start of her company. She had a need for a fashionable and sensible small handbag which turned into an infatuation with the accessory. During her restless search, she found that her needs were the same as many other women around the world and in three months, she had put her passion into a business. Berck wanted to created something that would work well for all occasions, as well as something that would fit every mood. Unfortunately denim dyes rub off onto leather and it is impossible to remove,” Berck also warns.

Born and raised in Rome in a family that was centered around food, De Laurentiis always knew she would be a chef. ::food:: Poached Pears in Honey, Ginger and Cinnamon Syrup Makes six sweet servings What You Will Need 2 cups simple syrup, recipe follows 1 (750) ml bottle Moscato wine or other sweet dessert wine 2 cinnamon sticks 2 tablespoons honey 1 ( ¾ inch) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise 6 small, firm, ripe Anjou or Bosc pears, peeled and cored Vanilla ice cream or gelato For the syrup 1 ½ cups sugar 1 ½ cups water What You Will Do STEP 1: In a saucepan large enough to hold all the pears, combine the wine, simple syrup, cinnamon sticks, honey and ginger. Scrape in the seeds from the vanilla bean and add the bean to the saucepan.
STEP 2: Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally, until the honey has melted. Add the pears and simmer over medium-low heat for fifteen to twenty minutes, turning occasionally, until the pears are tender.
STEP 3: Remove the pears from the liquid and allow to cool. Continue to simmer the liquid until it thickens and is reduced by half, about fifteen to twenty minutes. Cool to room temperature. Remove the cinnamon sticks and vanilla bean and discard, or keep to garnish! STEP 4: Place each pear on a small serving plate with a hefty scoop of vanilla ice cream. STEP 5: Drizzle on the syrup, serve immediately and devour!

Spring time is the perfect time to explore the food and festivities. Dupont Circle Washington, DC is a favorite gathering spot for the urban-lites who love to explore great food and woderful service. And if parking is a concern, there is valet parking and good-old public transportation right in front. The decor was refreshing with diversity in the table choices ranging in shape, sizes and height. Micah, the Marketing and Sales Manager of the restaurant was an excellent host as we sampled vegetable dumplings, shrimp rolls, shrimp wontons and chicken empanadas. Each selection had a surprising texture and fantastic ratio of meat to filling in each bite. This was my favorite stop of the night and see this as a frequent spot that I will surely visit with friends. The food was great, the service was topnotch and the decor was a breath of fresh air.

Washington, DC is known for little neighborhoods with quaint charm. Dupont Circle is known as one of the more popular areas for a very diverse crowd, both young and old. DishCrawl DC toured four fabulous places to eat in the neighborhood of Dupont Circle and what a treat it was. The first stop was Ping Pong, an Asian restaurant located right in the heart of the circle...so much so that the address is “One Dupont Circle.” Typically parking can be a nitemare, but oddly enough, I did not have a difficult time finding a metered space right in front of the restaurant.

We ended the DishCrawl at my new favorite place for frozen treats, tasti-D-lite. Greeted by the store manager with a delightful attitude and wonderful service, he explained that tasti-D-lite is a soft serve “frozen treat” and not an ice-cream because of the FDA regulations requiring icecream to have at least10% milk fat. It is not yogurt because it does not contain fermented yogurt cultures. For those who gave up ice cream for frozen yogurt, you will be happy to know that tasti-D-lite is lower in calories, carbs AND sugar than frozen yogurt (according to the nutritional facts of the brand). With most of their 100 flavors being gluten free, not only is it a tasty treat, but a healthier alrenative to ice cream and frozen yogurt having only 70 to 100 calories per 4 ounce serving...just in time for spring and summer!

o best understand the theory of relativity, all you have to do is be a selfproclaimed winter person in the Middle East, spend most of your life weathering balmy Februaries and then move to Chicago to learn what a true winter really means. One thing is certain, spend a couple of weeks in wintry Israel, and you will have experienced the hottest vacation imaginable.

city itself. Even chaos, it seems, requires municipal ordinance. Step out of the recently renovated national theater at night, and go for a drink at one of the dozens of bars in the area. Your server might bum a cigarette from you while taking your order even though it is illegal to smoke in public places in Israel. Then go for dinner at a dark, vintage designed restaurant with a DJ that incites people to dance on bar tops above the gigantic plates of Georgian food. Every place, almost with no exception, carries an ensemble of motifs that transcends its prescribed type.
Residents of Tel–Aviv like to compare it to New York. It is indeed the most vibrant, eclectic and liberal city in Israel. In addition to the cosmopolitan chic energy, there also comes a certain chaos the Big Apple would find hard to emulate. There are no Chinatowns, Little Italys and the like. Tel Aviv is fusion incarnate, a true melting pot of everything European, North African, Asian and American, and this orgy of constant sounds, flavors and architecture has a sexy, chaotic randomness to it that requires one to completely abandon selfconsciousness and truly let go.

Music comes from every corner café, the smallest of which will also offer you food with flavors, colors and quantities you did not know existed. On occasion, and quite randomly, thousands of people take advantage of their Friday day-off and enjoy a street party at Rotschild Boulevard, one of the trendiest neighborhoods in town. Walk through the crowds along the stretched boulevard and experience street art, music bands, trance parties, booze and vendors. If it is any indication on how Tel Avivians take pride in their town, this whole celebration is organized by none other than the
Yafo lies just south of Tel Aviv, and in fact is part of the same municipality. The old streets of Yafo make you feel that time chose to stand still. Take a walk through Yafo’s ancient port, where according to myth, Andromeda was chained to a rock as a sacrificial offering to a sea monster sent by Poseidon, and was rescued by Perseus. Walk up Andromeda Hill through the maze known as zodiac ally, where every street is named after an astrological sign. times, the crusades and was even mentioned in Greek mythology, all of which seems to be represented in the local flee market. Here, you can really lose track of time looking and bargaining for anything from fish to used microwaves. Israelis take their Hummus seriously. Where else would you find a type of restaurant (Hummusia) that serves only one type of dish? Yaffo has what most Israelis consider the best Hummus. Ali Karavan’s (Or Abu Hassan) Hummus place is one of Yafo’s known attractions. Do not let the basic façade fool you - it is fantastic. The restaurant closes when they run out of Hummus prepared for that day, usually
around 3PM.
Wild Anemones If you want to spend some time out of the city head south to the wild Anemone blossom. Heading south toward the northern part of the Negev, you’ll spot at first sporadically, dense patches of red, wild flowers so packed and bright it is impossible to watch without squinting. Known as the Red South Festival (Darom Adom), local townships and farms offer guided tours, farmer’s markets, cycling tracks and fine dining. The endless trails wrapped around the hills are an invitation to wander around and explore the wild red sea of flowers. There is more to Israel, of course, than chaotic city life, biblical scenery or hummus. There are many other attractions for every flavor. The Israeli winter, however, brings a unique sense of a true getaway. A seductive city with endless possibilities and wild nature at your doorstep, invite you to let go for a bit and take in a little chaos.
